Who was Ernie Pyle and why was
he so important to WWII G.I.s?
The answer: Mr. Pyle was a reporter during WWII who exhibited bravery by running onto
the battlefields to record the action. He became a friend to GI's and worked for the Scripps Newspaper Chain. His column was
listed in over 300 papers. Each article he wrote, frequently showcased the many heroic deeds of the GI's. Unfortunately, he
was killed in action on April 18, 1945 on an island off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. Plye's memorial, located in Okinawa is
one of only three American memorials permitted to remain once the war was over. Even more importantly, Plye, a civilian
was awarded the Purple Heart, an award usually reserved for military personel only.
